"To Remember"

She woke up screaming and thrashing, fighting against the restraints. She had no idea where she was. Her eyesight was blurred and her hearing muffled. She screamed her terror of not even knowing her own name.

Through the fog of her damaged eyes, she saw several beings rush toward her. She thrashed about some more. Warm hands tried to still her. A hypospray hissed against her neck. As she lost consciousness she felt a surge of triumph. “Hypospray.” She knew this thing, this word.

She woke up to darkness. She tried to sit up, but no…the restraints. She remembered. She screamed and fought the straps. A light came on overhead. She shrank back against the bed, as far away from the approaching figure as possible. The figure stood at the side of the bed. It did not touch her. There was a sound. Yes. It was a male and he was speaking. She heard his words as though from underwater.

“I…can’t…ears,” she said.

The man put a hand on hers and squeezed. She felt her heart rate decrease. Someone else entered the room, came to the other side of the bed and adjusted it. The man who had spoken had something in his hands and was leaning closer. He shouted, “Water.” Ah, yes. She nodded and felt a cup touch her lips and she drank.

He held something else in his hand and shouted again. “Med…in.” Yes, the hypospray. She nodded again, and felt herself slip into sleep.

The next time she opened her eyes she could see that shapes were more defined. Colors were a little brighter. Sounds were clearer; she could hear voices from another room. There was a man who seemed asleep in a chair next to her bed. He…smelled familiar.

“Do I know you?” He looked up.

“Nyota? It is I.”

She shook her head. “Nyota. Yes. That is my name. And I know you but can’t remember how.”

He was silent a moment. “I am Spock. I will get the doctor.”

Soon another man hurried into the room. “Nyota? How are you feeling?” He ran a scanner over her body.

“I can see a little better, and I can hear you. But I don’t remember anything except that I know him somehow,” she pointed to Spock.

The doctor chuckled. “Yes, you know him quite well, as a matter of fact. Do you remember me at all?”

She squinted and then shrugged. “No. Do I know you?”

“Yes, hon, you do. But don’t worry, you’re healing from the injuries just fine. And this gentleman here will help you remember. Spock, go ahead; she’s strong enough now.”

The one called Spock leaned closer. “Nyota, I must touch your face. Are you prepared?”

She nodded. “You smell good,” she said.

“Ha!” the doctor laughed. “Well, Spock, you know she’s a keeper if fancies you even when she can’t remember you.”

“Thank you, doctor. Now, if I may?”

“Yes, yes, get on with it. I’ll monitor her vitals.”

Very warm fingers touched her face. Spock’s deep voice entered her ears, then her mind. It was as though he walked with her on a dark path that somehow led to her memories.

She felt him hold on to her as she saw the attack, watched crewmembers fall and perish, felt the sting of primitive bullets hitting her flesh.

“Spock!” Tears filled her eyes as she reached for him.

He pulled her into his arms. “Welcome back, k’diwa.”
